LLM content optimization and common errors

When you translate a text from one language to another and then translate the result into a third language, the original meaning inevitably degrades and structural errors accumulate. A recent Microsoft study examining a similar compounding-error pattern found that LLMs create a similar effect. What’s in it for digital publishers, and how can you avoid “being lost in translation”?

AI agent task delegation and coordination errors

To understand how AI creates these errors during the content creation process, we need to look at a recent study by Microsoft researchers. They built a testing framework called DELEGATE-52 to observe exactly how Large Language Models (LLMs) handle the actual workloads that professionals assign to them. The researchers understood that digital publishers rarely ask an AI for a single, simple edit. Instead, we use AI for long, multi-session workflows where the AI handles a running sequence of revisions and refinements over time. To test how AI performs during these long workflows, the Microsoft team set up a rigorous and direct experiment:

  • They tested 19 different large language models;
  • They fed the models professional documents spanning 52 different domains. These domains included computer code, crystallography, accounting records, and database schemas, as well as natural-language writing like fiction, emails, and recipes;
  • They asked the AI models to complete 20 consecutive editing interactions on these documents.

The results of the test were clear: as the AI models processed more and more revisions, the documents became defective. By the time the AI finished its 20th round of revisions, more than half of the original text had been corrupted!

Why AI corruption threatens your ad revenue

So, what does a Microsoft research paper have to do with your publishing business? Everything. As a website owner, your content is your product. If you are leaning too heavily on AI to continuously edit and revise your drafts without strict human supervision, you are likely publishing corrupted, watered-down text. When readers land on an article that feels disjointed, lacks crucial context, or contains factual errors, they don’t stick around. They bounce. Low engagement and high bounce rates send a massive red flag to premium advertisers. This is especially problematic for publishers trying to generate income through ad monetization. If users aren’t staying on your page to read your content, they aren’t viewing your ads. When ad viewability drops, your CPMs crash, and your revenue dries up. Trustworthy, human-supervised content is the bedrock of successful ad monetization.

How to supervise your AI content workflow

You don’t necessarily need to stop using AI. It remains an excellent tool for outlining and accelerating your initial drafts. However, it requires active supervision. To ensure your content remains high-quality, follow this actionable checklist before publishing:

  • Mandatory fact-checking:
    Verify every single statistic, date, and quote generated by an AI against authoritative primary sources. Never assume the AI has provided accurate data;
  • Review for omissions:
    Compare the AI-edited version to your original notes or draft to ensure no critical context, arguments, or data points were deleted during the summarization process;
  • Inject your expertise:
    Manually edit the final draft to include your personal insights and maintain your site’s established tone of voice. Ensure the text reflects real human experience;
  • Verify user intent:
    Check that the final article directly answers the user’s search query with specific, helpful information rather than just generating a high word count.
